Summer is right around the corner...which means plans for summer reading are a must!  Prevent summer set-back and keep children reading all summer long.

Research has shown that children who continue to read during the summer vacation perform better in the fall when school resumes. Summer reading programs make educational reading activities fun and appealing to young people.

A great summer reading program is put on by the Virginia Beach Public Library.  This year's theme is Be Creative at Your Library.  Check out www.vbgov.com for more information!

Another great program is put on by Barnes and Noble.  Kids earn a free book just by reading 8 books.  What a deal!  You can find all of the information at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/.  The summer reading journal can be found on this website, along with other activities to go along with their theme.

One of my favorite websites for helping children find appropriate books for their reading level is www.bookwizard.scholastic.com.  If you click on "Leveled Search" on the left-hand side, you will be brought to a page where you can customize your search by grade level, genre, interest, etc.  This list can then be taken to the public library where you can check the books out, and you can read them towards the library summer reading program!
