Physical Fitness is a LIFETIME
habit, not a one time activity.
Do something
EVERYDAY
to keep
 physically fit, healthy and happy.

 Our theme this year is:

“State to State in 2008 & '09!”

Each class will be divided into a “State team” (Team Maryland, Team Kentucky,  and Team Tennessee) during P.E. time.  Notice which states we have chosen to represent?  Three that border our lovely state of Virginia!  Which other two states border Virginia? ...

Again, we will dedicate every Friday to our “Running Club” where students work to improve their cardiovascular endurance, as well as accumulate miles, taking them across the country to different states! Students will accumulate miles to earn them spots in the 5-Mile Club, 10-Mile Club, 15-Mile Club, and 20-Mile Club, 25-Mile Club, and the 30+ Pot of Gold!

Last year's students ran a combined total of 10, 119 miles!!

Class Information

Clothing for P.E.

Salem Rams have PE everyday, so please be sure that your son or daughter is dressed for the activity.  Tennis shoes or rubber soled shoes are the best.  Mary Jane type shoes, jelly shoes, and loafers can be very slippery on the gym floor.  In addition, platform tennis shoes and slip on shoes (with no backs or no straps) can easily be the cause of a twisted or sprained ankle.  If your child wears these types of shoes, please have them bring an extra pair of rubber soled shoes to wear during gym time.  Girls please be sure to wear shorts underneath your dress or skirt so you will be able to participate.

Medical Notes for P.E.

Students are expected to participate in all P.E. class activities.  If your child is physically unable to participate due to an illness or injury, please send a note stating why the child is unable to participate.  A doctor's note is required if your child is unable to participate for more than 3 consecutive days.

 P.E. Curriculum

The Physical Education program at Salem Elementary encourages physical fitness, creativity, good safety practices, along with the development of motor skills, social skills, and a good self-concept. When teaching movement skills, an emphasis is placed on a success oriented, problem solving program.

The First Tee of Hampton Roads Mobile Learning Bus made a stop here at Salem last Spring.  Three classes were able to participate in chipping and putting on and off the bus.  This, along with our birdieball striking unit, have sparked the interest of golf in MANY of our Salem students.  If you are interested in learning more about golf or are interested in lessons, camps, etc.  I encourage you to visit The First Tee of Hampton Roads YMCA, located just down the road from Salem Elementary!

Birdieball

Last Spring, Students in grades 3-5 worked on the skill of striking with long handled implements, using golf clubs.  Instead of hitting golf balls we were hitting birdieballs.  Birdieballs are shaped like napkin ring holders.  They feel just like a golf ball when hit, but the average distance a birdieball will fly is 30-50 yards.  Instead of hitting off of tees, we are hitting off of the Birdieball Strikepads.  These strikepads allow for you to hit anytime/any place without damaging your club or yard!

Visit www.birdieball.com for more information.  This website is also very helpful because it provides instructional videos as well as how to purchase strikepads and birdieballs!

CUP STACKING

Students have been taught the skills used in the sport of cup stacking.  Many parents have asked about the brand of cups we are using.  We are using the Speed Stack brand and they can be purchased at Target or Walmart.  Visit www.speedstacks.com for more information.  This website is also very helpful because it provides instructional videos on how to build the different stacks!
